Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race

The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is an annual event that challenges the creativity of engineering students. Since 1975 engineering students from schools across North America have been competing in this student-run competition which requires teams to design, build and race a concrete toboggan downhill in a series of events.

About 20 teams from Canadian and US Universities and colleges design and build custom engineered bobsled-like toboggans to race for awards and recognition. Each toboggan has a metal frame, steering and braking systems, and are built on reinforced concrete skis. Teams spend many months designing and building their toboggans to the stringent rules and safety standards, and compete to win the coveted CSCE Cup, and be the fastest toboggan down the slopes.

This year’s competition, hosted by London and the University of Western, starts February 4th and culminates in a public race at Boler Mountain on February 7.
